How to motivate yourself when you don’t like to sit at a desk all day

So while I was working on a Kickstarter campaign for my eco-friendly leggings brand, I realized once again that sitting at a desk all day is not what I was designed to do. I’m fine with working at my computer for 3-4 hours. Then I get tired, anxious and uncomfortable. No matter how nicely I decorate my desk, I can’t get myself to sit there for too long.

I was struggling with this issue throughout my college years where (oh surprise!) you have to sit and study or sit and listen most of your time. And now that I’m self-employed and at home alone, the struggle continues. But that’s when I learned how to overcome my desk boredness and still stay motivated.

Change of scenery

Sometimes I don’t sit at my desk at all and sometimes I only spend a few hours there before moving elsewhere. Shortly said, you have to change up your scenery! I usually move between my desk, the kitchen table (where we have the best light), and the couch. And when I’m really fed up with my appartment and can’t find any inspiration at all, then I know it is time to get out and to a coffee shop. I’m a total Starbucks lover (even though the atmosphere here in Germany is not at all comparable to the one in the States) but lately I’m feeling more like little cozy coffee shops that serve organic and fresh food and beverages. In the summer months, I love to take my laptop outside and sit in the shade. Being in nature always reinspires me.

Work on the go

It is funny but I’m the most productive when traveling. I’m especially fond of airports. This international vibe of business people, travelers and backpackers gets my creative juices flowing like almost nothing else. It feels like I’m having the world at my fingertips! A couple of weeks ago, I was stuck in a plane for two hours due to some heavy snowing. It got me in such a productive mood that I wrote two blog and multiple Instagram posts!

Choose a profession where you don’t have to sit at a desk all day

This is probably the hardest as many well-paying jobs are office jobs nowadays. I’m still struggling with figuring out what I want to do. I thought being my own boss and not being bound to office hours or leaving my home would be a dream come true. Now I have to realize that it too requires a lot of hours sitting at the desk. Some jobs I can think of right now that don’t require a lot of desk work are:

  • Personal Trainer
  • Model
  • Aesthetician
  • Hairdresser
  • Athlete
  • Construction Worker
  • Janitor
  • Artist
  • Actor/Actress
  • and so on

You probably can think of many more.

The number one important thing is that you stay true to yourself and find something that makes you happy. And if an office job is just not for you, then don’t do it! The possibilites are endless and if you really want it, you will find a way!

I will definitely let you know once I’ve figure it out 😉

So now it is your turn: Are you a desk person or not?
